About Tabitha Acret
A Mother who has become A voice for change
Tabitha Acret is one of Australia's most outspoken advocates for domestic and family violence reform. Her work is driven not by theory, but by lived experience — and an unshakeable conviction that the system must do better.
Tabitha Acret
DVF Advocate — Australia
Tabitha's daughter, Mackenzie Anderson, was murdered in 2022 by her ex-partner while holding her 23-month-old son. The horror did not stop here; a 4-year legal battle followed, with the perpetrator only receiving a minimum sentence of 15 years.
Tabitha led a tireless campaign to appeal the sentence. They subsequently lost the appeal, which led Tabitha to campaign for legislative change, and she was successful in changing the legislation in NSW to a minimum 25-year DV sentence.
Over years of tireless work, Tabitha has engaged with policymakers, legal professionals, media, and survivor communities across Australia. Tabitha currently holds positions on the NSW Lived Experience Advisory group and the NSW Serious Offenders Parole Board Her advocacy is grounded in a simple truth: domestic and family violence is not a private matter. It is a systemic failure — one that demands systemic solutions. Tabitha refuses to accept anything less.
What Drives the Work
Survivor-Centred
Every policy position, every campaign, every public statement is grounded in the lived experience of survivors. Their voices lead.
Accountability
Perpetrators must be held accountable. So must the institutions and systems that enable ongoing abuse through inaction or inadequate response.
Systemic Change
Band-aid solutions are not enough. Tabitha advocates for root-and-branch reform of the legal, policy, and social frameworks that govern Australia's response to DVF.
